My friend Ellie Harris, from England, is a Woman who LOVES to travel.
Ellie is preparing for her upcoming trip to New Zealand and was gracious to share with us her personal safety tips for a Woman traveller.
Here are some great words of advice from Ellie to other Women travelling solo or in a group of friends:
Travelling solo as a female can be scary but it can always be very empowering!
As long as you travel with a certain amount of knowledge and awareness you do not need to fear it!
I have done a few solo travels in the UK & Europe.
I have travelled with friends to further explorations of countries like Australia and soon to be New Zealand!
Safety and preparation?
I find travelling solo as a woman can have its challenges. Safety is key to a successful journey, preplanning is paramount and a little precaution helps alota lot! Take time to research prior to your trip!
You have to always plan for any emergency you might bump into such as travel disruption and delays. Knowing your destination’s full address, phone number and having this written down on paper as well as on your phone is important.
Making sure you know where local bus stations/taxis ranks/metros are.
Know the emergency services/transport police phone numbers for countries you are travelling in.
Make sure you tell someone where you are each day and stay in contact with people throughout your travels to enable your safety. Always tell your family about addresses of stays as well as dates of arrivals/departures/flight numbers.
The other thing I do to maintain my safety as a solo traveller is to not look lost.
I find you are much more vulnerable to scams/danger this way. Instead if worried and uneasy stay in busier areas and ask businesses rather than! walkers by. ALWAYS use licensed drivers!
When you travel with friends I would say still stick to the above rules and maintain a good guard regardless of solo or with friends.
Safe travels!

Great advice Roza and Ellie. And I think these tips don’t only apply to women, but to men travelling on their own as well. Maybe also helpful to learn a few key phrases in the local language? Things like “help,” “police,” or “I’m lost”… What do you think?
